Title: Reading Allowed: True Stories and Curious Incidents From A Provincial Library
Author: Chris Paling
Mini Review: This is Paling’s account of working in a Library and the people he meets both behind the scenes and in front of the counter. I love libraries and hoped that a non-fiction account of a Librarians day to day interactions would be enlightening. All that was brought to light, other than the very concerning defunding of library budgets, was Paling’s own prejudices and seeming disrespect for the people he found himself among – especially the public. He changes the names of the individuals but the descriptions would give enough detail for the individual to recognise themselves, and many of Paling’s ‘observations’ are hurtful and at times offensive.
